 Most of the wine grape types grown in California today were imported by Europeans emigrating to the United States between 1850 and 1910. Of course, new varieties and modern clones of old varieties have been added to the list -- both officially, through bona fide nurseries, and unofficially, via the suitcase mode of importation -- especially since the "boutique" winery boom began in California in the late 1960s.
